Thursday 28th May – Bike ride ***** sunny 15 n. miles

OMG two very different ways to start the day! NO wind AND we had a visit from 2 Police Municipale telling us that we were not allowed to sleep in our woody spot – we were actually reading in bed when they told us!!! I think we have been really lucky to have four nights here – it has been great:) We had a leisurely start then after breakfast we got the bikes off and biked route No. 1 on the velo map. This takes you from where we park through beautiful countryside and vineyards on the I’ile St Martin past an archaeological dig of a roman villa, down to the tiny fishing village. Along the road for a short way (where we saw 4 black winged stints) then across the L’ile St. Martin Salins (salt pans) to the beach where we were yesterday. We cycled across the beach and along the bumpy road to the dreaded chicane. We saw an avocet flying round in circles getting very agitated so we assume it had a nest just over the bank. Across the bridge into the old town where we took a detour and went along the canal towards Gruissan Plage. We ate our lunch on the rocky breakwater near the windsurfing shop. There is a long prom in front of the shanty village of houses on stilts and we biked along that to the end then back around the edge of the village and back along the canal. The cycle route then takes you right round the old town Etang de Gruissan, through the garrigue which smelt amazing as it is so warm today. Then it was over the bailey bridge and up into the rocky wooded hills and back to our parking spot. 16.15 miles, pedalling for 2 hours and out for 3 ½ :) We relaxed and read our books and spent a while looking for the spare key to the top box (no sign!). We left out spot around 6 o’clock and went to the camper aire to pinch their water to fill all our various bottles then went for a ride to the fishing village and into the woods again. We had thought we might stay where we had seen another camper like ours set up on our bike ride but they had gone and we didn’t think we should stay as we had already been told this morning! Left Gruissan and travelled our favourite route past the Canal du Robine at Mandriac and parked up at Port La Nautique where we know we can park with no hassles. The only down side of parking here are the insects, not all mozzies though and not too bad. It was a good move because we were able to sit out until really quite late watching 2 foot long fish jumping out of the water, a great white egret fishing along the bank and lastly a beautiful sunset over Narbonne. We had a delicious tea of left overs to finish off a good day – apart from the beloved camera (which we thought was dead a few months ago but had a second lease of life) has got some kind of damage on the lens and is leaving a mark on the photos which is not good at all:( Will have to get another one the same off e-bay!!
